Here’s how that Brendon Urie, Juice WRLD collab happened

Producer/songwriter Benny Blanco is certainly to thank for bringing Panic! At The Disco frontman Brendon Urie and Juice WRLD together for “Roses.”

We’re hours removed from the release, but that didn’t stop us from wondering how exactly it happened. Blanco chatted with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 on Apple Music where he revealed how the epic collab played out.

Blanco and Juice WRLD have more than 50 tracks in the works, but “Roses” is the first that’s been released thanks to the idea of recruiting Urie.

“When this whole wave started with the emo rapping with the—everything goes in waves. And all these kids, Juice WRLD, and all these type of guys, they grew up worshiping these guys. The whole Warped Tour movement, I was like, how has no one done this yet? How has no one put together the emo dudes with the emo rappers? How has that not happened? Why is no one doing this? Am I the only guy who’s thinking this?

“And I asked Juice, and we have this record. It was actually the first record we’ve ever made. We’ve probably made 50 records, but it was the first one we ever made and I always loved it so much and I was like ‘Bro, how are we not putting the dude from Panic! At the Disco on this, Brendon Urie?’ And he was just like ‘Dude, you know him?’ And I was like ‘Yeah.’”

Blanco actually worked with 3OH!3 on their 2008 album WANT, co-writing and co-producing mega-hit “DONT TRUST ME” as well as “RICHMAN.”

“Dude, telling these guys that I worked on 3OH!3 is—they go insane. Their brain flips, and I go to Brendon, I was like ‘Yo, would you ever wanna get on this?’ He’s like ‘I copy those guys copying me.’ He was like, ‘I listen to those records, and I’m just like holy shit, these guys are so f*cking inspiring, they’re so good.’

“And it’s just so cool to see both of these guys from such different worlds coming together and just really vibing on the same shit. Juice knows exactly where he was the first time he heard Panic! At the Disco, “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” Brendon knows exactly where he was the first time he heard Juice WRLD. They’re both equally important to each other’s lives. Brendon was like, ‘That shit’s keeping me inspired now.’”

Benny Blanco and Halsey

Blanco also worked with Halsey this year, teaming up with her and Khalid for “Eastside” this summer. The trio hit the American Music Awards stage for a live performance, where Halsey gave a whole new meaning to the term live tweeting.

This won’t be the singer’s last collab with Blanco, as he revealed to Lowe during their Beats 1 interview. Blanco stated he wished he could release songs every week to which Lowe mentioned, “there’s always things you’re working on” and vaguely mentioned a male or female artist he’s working with on their next album.

“I think you’re talking about Halsey,” Blanco answered to which Lowe agreed.

Blanco then expanded on why exactly he loves working with the singer:

“Who else has literally the best voice? You hear her come in on anything and you’re like, oh, I believe it. It’s crazy. I’ll hear it in my head how she’s going to do it and I be like, oh yeah, it’s going to be good. And then somehow, whatever I hear in my head, she does even better than I picture in my head. She just has this way, I don’t even know what it is. All I know is that I’m happy that for some reason, she thinks I have two brain cells to work with. She’s just going to make me look good. This year is about Halsey making me look good.”
