Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes further explains ruptured vocal cord

Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes has taken to Twitter to further explain his ruptured vocal cord. Following a bit of discourse over his singing technique, Sykes cleared the air by saying that his vocal cords are taking a beating from being on the road for a year, as well as battling typical illnesses.

Sykes’ explanation follows the band’s announcement to cancel the remaining U.S. tour dates. That said, Sykes’ recent diagnosis forced the band to put their Phoenix and Las Vegas shows on hold.

“People forget the vocal cords are a muscle, a muscle that can be compromised by not just exertion but the elements/conditions etc.,” Sykes says in a tweet. “Screaming when done correctly is actually less strain on the voice than singing in your top octaves (in fact, if I’m trying to go easy on my voice, I’ll often resort to doing my old style of screaming, it’s literally like putting on an accent) but this is just something that happens sometimes… as much as it sucks!”

Yesterday, Oli Sykes shared that to avoid permanent damage, he would have to rest his vocals for a bit of time.

Fever 333 and Thrice, who were currently on tour with the band, also made separate posts about the cancellation.

The news also comes after BMTH’s Jimmy Kimmel Live set Thursday night where they played “medicine” and “mother tongue.” Bassist Matt Kean was not present for the performance as tourmates FEVER 333 guitarist Stephen Harrison filled in.

Neither the band nor Kean have commented on the cause for the fill-in at the time. You can check out the performances below.

We are wishing Oli Sykes a speedy recovery at this time.
