Shinedown respond to Bring Me The Horizon, say rock's doing well

Shinedown drummer Barry Kerch has responded to a comment from Bring Me The Horizon about rock music.

He disagrees with the band’s remarks about the state of the genre. He thinks it’s doing well, thank you very much, and the problem is in the details.

A few months ago, Bring Me The Horizon’s Jordan Fish shared some thoughts on how rock music is doing during an interview. The musician said he believes  rock bands should step up their songwriting game if they want to do better on streaming platforms.

According Fish, rock music is having a hard time on streaming “because it’s bad, generally”.

“The people who are writing the songs aren’t good enough songwriters,” the keyboardist offered.

“In my opinion, it’s mostly shite,” he continues, explaining he doesn’t think most people writing rock songs are good writers. “I don’t love the music on Hot Hits UK but they are well-written songs and that’s something a lot of rock bands don’t appreciate. The craft of writing good songs is hard.”

Now, the Shinedown drummer is adding his thoughts to the conversation. In an interview with Finland’s Kaaos TV (per Blabbermouth), Kerch disagreed with Fish in some points.

“I think rock ‘n’ roll, as a whole, is doing well,” he said. “I think a lot of times it gets branded into such smaller genres—this is ‘active rock,’ this is ‘alternative,’ this is ‘mainstream.'”

“That’s all rock and roll, and all of that is doing well, but if you break it down into little things, sometimes it looks like it might not be doing well,” he continues.  “I agree with him that songwriting is the key. There’s been a lot of people that aren’t writing good songs because they’re just putting stuff out there.”
