See the chilling new clip detailing the true story behind ‘Candyman’
Slasher film lovers have been on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the reboot of 1992’s Candyman. Now, director Nia DaCosta has shared a brand new clip for the upcoming film.
On June 17, DaCosta released a chilling animated teaser that traces the origins of the hook-handed killer.

Co-written by Jordan Peele (Us, Get Out) and DaCosta, Candyman was originally supposed to arrive in theaters this month. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film’s release has been pushed back to September 25. This delay hasn’t stopped DaCosta and Peele from sharing more of what fans can expect from the film.
Fans got their first taste of Candyman back in February when the first trailer was released. DaCosta’s Candyman is set 30 years after the original 1992 movie. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Anthony McCoy, the infant character in the original film who gets kidnapped by the Candyman. Eventually, McCoy grows up to become an artist and the Candyman returns when McCoy and his girlfriend move to Chicago. Their new condo is built in the same place where Candyman’s haunting grounds used to be.
Now, DaCosta is further telling the story of Candyman’s origins in a new chilling clip. Within the plot of 2020’s Candyman, the hook-handed killer shares his stories with McCoy who then uses them as inspiration for his paintings. The new teaser captures this aspect of the film by using puppets that show McCoy painting at his easel. Each portrait he makes corresponds with one of Candyman’s stories that often detail racist injustice and violent events.

The last part of the chilling new clip tells the story of Candyman himself. He was a 19th-century artist and the son of a wealthy black family. He eventually falls in love with the daughter of a white landowner. Due to this, he ends up lynched by a mob that cut off his hand and replace it with a hook. They then covered his body in bees so he’s stung to death.
Peele alluded to Candyman’s origin story by tweeting the new clip along with the bee emoji.

No information has been released on if Candyman will be further delayed as the pandemic continues. Last week, theaters announced that they anticipate reopening at partial capacity by July.
