'Captain Marvel' projected for second-highest debut for Marvel origin film

Captain Marvel is already crushing box office expectations and its opening weekend isn’t even over yet. As of Friday evening, the film had already pulled in an astounding $88.3 million worldwide. If box office projections hold true, Captain Marvel could cement itself as the seventh-highest opener in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the second-highest debut for a Marvel origin story—just behind Black Panther.

I think it’s safe to say Captain Marvel is kicking ass and taking names.

Despite internet trolls attempting to sabotage the film by posting terrible reviews on Rotten Tomatoes before the movie’s debut, Captain Marvel is soaring past its predicted $125 million opening with no signs of slowing down.

Between Thursday’s previews (pulling in $20.7 million) and Friday’s showings (raking in another $61.2 million), Captain Marvel is now predicted to pull in between $145 million and $155 million at the box office for its opening weekend.

Should that hold true, it will solidify the film as the third-biggest March opening. It will rank behind Batman vs Superman ($166 million in 2016) and Beauty and the Beast ($174 million in 2017).

Some analysts are even predicting that the film could pull in as much as $195 million.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Should Captain Marvel pull in anything above $147 million, it will surpass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It will snag the title as seventh-biggest MCU opener right behind Iron Man 3 ($174 million), Captain America: Civil War ($179 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191 million), Black Panther ($202 million), The Avengers ($207 million),and Avengers: Infinity War ($258 million).

Should its debut break $158 million, it will become the fourth-biggest female-led movie opener.

Captain Marvel is also crushing the box office in China, raking in $34.3 million and making it the second-highest launch for a Marvel title in the area, right behind Avengers: Infinity War.

The official opening weekend will not be finalized until Monday. However, analysts should have a better prediction of the film’s projected total between Saturday night – Sunday.
