‘Captain Marvel’ gets ’90s Blockbuster VHS rental with fan-made replica

Captain Marvel wowed movie-goers with its mid-1990’s realism when it released in March of 2019. Everything was timely, from the soundtrack to the set pieces and costumes and even a Blockbuster that Brie Larson crashed through.

It’s really a shame that Marvel didn’t see through releasing the film after its theater run onto VHS as a promotion item. But, one fan went the distance and made a replica of what the Captain Marvel film would look like if we saw it when entering that iconic video store on a Friday night, in search of a great flick and some candy.

We all remember the sounds and smells of Blockbuster. It was the thing to do on the weekend. You would grab your buddies and ride on down to grab the latest video game or horror-flick. Well, one Marvel fan is really making us feel the nostalgia by recreating a Captain Marvel VHS model, complete with all of the important stickers and that wonderful blue and yellow case.

Reddit user r/Naweezy uploaded the picture late on March 24 and it has already amassed nearly 24,000 upvotes. Not bad for a piece of 90’s tech.

Speaking with ComicBook.com about acquiring all of the VHS tapes that were stocked in the Blockbuster they built for the set, production designer Andy Nicholson said it wasn’t easy, but it was certainly cheap.

“The thing about VHSes is when you can find them, they’re not expensive because no one really wants them because they’re such low resolution. It took a lot of time with my set decoration department to source everything we needed, but none of the things were expensive,” Nicholson said.

“Occasionally they’d go on eBay and they’d find you know a crate of videos, but it was about getting the ones from the right year. It wasn’t difficult it just took a lot of time and you know, if you go to the library for a film, there are places you can rent books by the yard from but that is not the case for VHSes and there’s not that much call for them, so it took a lot of time.”

The attention to detail showed by Nicholson and his team was astounding.

“We bought a boatload of empty Blockbuster style cases for a lot of the stuff, that was the easy part of it,” Nicholson continued. “But you know in Blockbusters, you would also have the original covers and getting enough of those for the store was quite something.”

Well, maybe Nicholson would consider hiring r/Naweezy to his team given their attention to detail.

More Marvel

Black Widow, one of Marvel‘s flagship MCU Phase 4 releases has been officially delayed due to coronavirus. The film was originally scheduled for a May 1 release date but has now been pushed back indefinitely.

Black Widow now joins the likes of A Quiet Place Part IIMulanF9 and the new James Bond flick No Time To Die as theatrical release delays continue to grow due to coronavirus.

Until March 17, the only major delay under the Disney umbrella was Mulanwhich was originally postponed in China after mass theater closures, but has since been pushed back indefinitely in the rest of the world as well.

The influx of delays comes after a massive wave of half-capacity showings and entire shutdowns of the major corporations such as AMC and Regal.

Marvel carefully plans out its release schedule years in advance. This is to accommodate many things. One being the massive budgets of the flicks. Two being the even more massive revenue. Lastly, the incredibly massive fan hype the films generate, particularly Marvel flicks.

With Black Widow becoming the first Marvel film to have a delayed release date, it seems as if it will push back into the pre-planned scheduled releases of the Disney+ shows the Falcon And The Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki

If enough of a delay happens with Black Widow, it could even push back other upcoming Marvel films including The Eternals, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten RingsDoctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness and more.

Marvel was seeking to capitalize on Phase 4 as a new chapter in the MCU. The majority of events were set to follow those in the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow however, is set as a prequel to that film, following the events of Natasha Romanova (Scarlet Johansson) in the U.S.S.R. just after Captain America: Civil War

Hollywood is taking a massive impact lately that will definitely take some time to recover from.

Some companies are attempting to mitigate profit losses by early-releasing films that are in theaters to Video On Demand. Universal Pictures already announced that The Invisible Man, Trolls World Tour and The Hunt would all be coming to VOD. Others are expected to follow suit.

This Disney delay is poised to shake up the film industry further.  As for the Phase 4 MCU, it seems even the Infinity Gauntlet couldn’t get it back on schedule now.
