‘Cats’ on pace to lose at least $71M after poor box office performance

Cats continues its rough go of things at the box office and in general. After recently being pulled from awards consideration by Universal, the feline-film is now set to lose up to $100 million.

Many expected the film to be a massive success. In part, due to its star-studded cast that caters to both young and old. But, the first trailer left fans a bit uneasy to say the least. To quote Chad Gilbert, “it’s all downhill from here.”

So, how can a film that has such an all-star cast as Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellan, Idris Elba and Jason Derulo perform so badly? Well, it freaked people out. From critics to celebrities, the movie was weird.

According to Deadline, Cats cost roughly $90 million to make. The P&A, or Prints and Advertising, costs roughly $115 worldwide. Theater rentals and other entertainment services including streaming are allegedly totaling $155 million and home entertainment roughly totals $226 million.

If the film somehow reaches $100 million at the global box-office, it seems it’s only like to lose around $71 million but with all of the other factors, Cats could lose over $100 million.

Cats is currently in theaters. But who knows for how long given its performance.

More Cats

Cats is not having the best time in the starlight right now. After a review embargo, a box office and critical failure and the fact that it just looks weird it’s hard to sink any lower. Well, it’s possible. Universal Pictures just removed Cats from any Academy Award nominations.

In its opening weekend, Cats made just $15.28 million worldwide.

Universal Pictures removed Cats from their For Your Consideration campaign which means they are not seeking Academy Awards for the flick.

Recently, Westworld Evan Rachel Wood made headlines in a scathing critique of the film on Twitter. The now-deleted tweets read as follows.

“……..#cats is actually worse than I thought it would be, And I already thought it would be horrible. But….I am actually speechless. Why would you change the choreography? I…am SPEECHLESS. Its not the casts fault (sic). Its…maybe the worst thing I have ever seen. Ever.”

Wood then took to Instagram Live to better convey her thoughts.

“They changed all the iconic choreography. Took out 70% of the main characters. Changed the plot. I grew up in theatre, was married to a dancer. I have massive respect for what they do, which is why this was such a letdown and missed opportunity for that community.”

Wood is not alone in her hatred for Cats. The furry film currently sits at a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and just a 2.6/10 on IMDb.

Considering the major competition for the film on its opening weekend was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker it’s safe to assume it probably wouldn’t gross that much its opening weekend anyway. But, Universal Pictures should be preparing to take a hit on Cats considering the budget was a reported $95 million.
