Chadwick Boseman wins first SAG Award for final film role in ‘Ma Rainey’
He has won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Levee Green.April 4, 2021
Unlike other television and film award shows, the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ nominees and winners are voted on entirely by their peers. Approximately 160,000 members of the SAG-AFTRA union take part in the voting process each year. This group is made of numerous individuals within the entertainment industry including actors, announcers, dancers and recording artists among others.
This year, SAG-AFTRA has recognized Boseman for his role as Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf. During her speech, she went on to thank the film’s producer Denzel Washington and August Wilson who wrote the play the movie is based on. As well, she ended the speech with a moving quote from Boseman.
“If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind,” she says in her speech. “That’s a quote by Chadwick Boseman. Thank you Screen Actors [and] thank you Chad. Thank you.”

Back in August, Boseman tragically died at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. While battling the disease, however, the actor filmed various projects including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is based on an August Wilson play, and the Spike Lee-directed Da 5 Bloods.
Boseman has made SAG Awards history as the first actor to earn four nominations in one year. Along with Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, he is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Da 5 Bloods. Additionally, the casts of both films are up Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
In Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Boseman plays the passionate musician Levee Green. As a Black man in the 1920s, Green is tired of not getting credit for his ideas and music. The character represents the history of Black music appropriation in America and is inspired by actual musicians.
Previously, Boseman and his Black Panther co-stars won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards in 2019. While accepting the award, Boseman talked about representation for people of color in film and first teased Black Panther 2.
Back in December, Sony and Marvel confirmed Boseman will not be recast in the upcoming film following his death. The companies also paid tribute to the actor on his 44th birthday with a new Marvel intro that will play before future Black Panther films.

Although both films have been released, fans haven’t seen the last of Boseman just yet. The actor appears as both T’Challa and Star-Lord in the upcoming Marvel series What If…? which premieres on Disney+ sometime this year.
