Chance the Rapper may charge for his music for the first time

Chance the Rapper is a rare breed in that he's been extraordinarily successful all without charging for his music.

He's won three Grammys all while releasing his music entirely for free, however that may change.

In an interview with Complex that talked about everything from his daughter to his success, the topic of new music had to come up and it eventually did.

“Having it for purchase would be dope,” said the three-time Grammy winner. “This is hypothetical. There is no album. I don't have anything sitting. I have songs recorded but… I'm chilling right now. I want to make something with a wider scope. 10 Day was all about getting suspended. Acid Rap was a lot about acid. Coloring Book was about being a father and God. I think whatever this album is, it'd wouldn't be so centered. Whatever my next thing is, it'll be a bit bigger. Maybe it'll have some sort of visual component to it. A movie or a play. Something a bit different.”

Childish Gambino's latest release, “Awaken, My Love!”, featured a virtual reality component which allowed fans to view footage from his Pharos concert in September at Joshua Tree in California with footage available in a 360-degree perspective.

However, because Chance puts out his music for free, it becomes very hard for any of his albums to gain any traction in the Billboard charts. Only his latest release, Coloring Book, made it to the Billboard 200 where it peaked at No. 8. While the Billboard charts do measure streams, it would take 1,500 to equal one album sale.

“I might actually sell this album,” said Chance. “That's a big step in itself. I kind of hate the fact I can't chart, really. I can chart but the way they have the stream shit set up is weak as fuck. It's unfair.”

Regardless of whether Chance puts up his next album for sale or not, we just can't wait for new music from him!
