A disaster tour company told Reuters they’ve had a 40 percent increase in bookings since the HBO series premiered in May. Others are reporting similar increases. While it seems like a morbid spot for photos, there doesn’t appear to be much risk from the radiation.
One tour guide insists visitors are safe from lingering radiation levels.
“During the entire visit to the Chernobyl exclusion zone, you get around two microsieverts, which is equal to the amount of radiation you’d get staying at home for 24 hours,” says the guide.
