As VICE explains, accounts have varied from “'a large, black, bat-like being with glowing red eyes' to 'a big owl' or something that resembled a 'Gothic gargoyle' or a 'Mothman.'”
In fact, they say that in 2017 alone, there were 55 reported Chicago-area sightings.
Of course, these all lead back to the “Mothman sightings” that were reported in Point Pleasant, West Virginia from 1966 to 1967. During that time, there were several reports of a man-like “large bird with red eyes” and the story was later told in John Keel’s 1975 novel The Mothman Prophecies, which was adapted into the 2002 film of the same name.
Chicago residents don't seem to be too frightened, though. In fact, they've had the best response:
It’s probably just a super tall person in a puffy coat. It’s cold as balls in the Chi. #Vice #chicago #mothman
