Chris Cornell-produced song with daughter Toni gets official release

While it’s unclear if or when we’ll see Chris Cornell‘s final Soundgarden recordings, the late musician’s daughter is delivering something new from him.

His teen daughter, Toni Cornell, released “Far Away Places” today under her name with production credits from her father.

The new track is a ballad Cornell and his daughter produced together when she was just 12 years old.

The song is one of the final things Cornell recorded before his tragic death in May 2017. The recording was made by the father-daughter duo in February 2017, just months prior to his death.

It was released on iTunes today and is available on other streaming services. It is also featured in a short film, also titled Far Away Places by Tatiana Shanks, a family friend. The movie has been featured in international film festivals with the song itself winning awards at various film festivals.

Proceeds from the single’s sales will be donated towards The New York Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Before Cornell’s death, Soundgarden had been working on a new record, though according to guitarist Kim Thayil, demoed vocals are being withheld by unnamed people delaying its release.

In an interview with Music Radar, Thayil says Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron’s home recording skills ended up resulting in high-quality demos that could be used for an album at some point.

“Right now, that’s all kind of stalled. We tried to get this going two years ago, but we’re not in possession of any of the demos that Chris was working on with them. We have copies of them, but what we need are the files, so that we’d be able to overdub and finish the record. We are not in possession of those,” says Thayil.
