Coachella may not be happening in 2020 as originally hoped

Back in March, Goldenvoice, the organizers of Coachella, announced that the festival has been postponed to October of this year. The postponement is due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, with concerts and festivals unlikely to return until 2021 and Goldenvoice staying quiet about Coachella 2020’s future, many wonder if the festival will actually happen this year.

Now, it is being reported that Coachella organizers are asking the 2020 acts to play next year instead, fueling the rumors that this year’s festival will be canceled altogether.

Various festivals have been postponed or canceled worldwide due to the ongoing pandemic. Reading & Leeds, Glastonbury, Bunbury, Mayhem Festival and SXSW are just a few of the festivals to be moved to 2021.

Coachella was originally scheduled to happen in April, but organizers decided to move to California music festival to October as coronavirus continued to progress. Some also petitioned Goldenvoice to postpone the festival over coronavirus concerns. However, it is now being reported that Coachella 2020 may be canceled altogether.

New reports are saying that Coachella organizers are asking the scheduled 2020 acts to play in 2021 instead. If true, this is a clear sign that this year’s festival will be canceled. Some of the headliners scheduled for this year include Rage Against The Machine, Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Run The Jewels and more.

However, according to one source, not every act scheduled for the 2020 festival has been asked to play in 2021.

California is currently in the process of phasing out of coronavirus lockdown. However, with the state’s social distancing restrictions, it is unlikely that Goldenvoice will be able to host its near 200,000 Coachella guests in October.

At this time, Goldenvoice has made no official statement on if Coachella 2020 is canceled.

Goldenvoice’s decision to move the April festival to October was also in efforts to retain some profits. Coachella is the biggest music festival in the U.S. and generates as much as $100 million for Goldenvoice and their partner AEG.

However, if Coachella is forced to postpone its 2020 festival to 2021, Goldenvoice and AEG may be looking at a large profit loss.

Since the pandemic began, live events companies have seen major financial losses. This month, Live Nation furloughed almost a quarter of its North American staff. Ticketmaster has also furloughed a percentage of its staff as part of the company’s cost-reduction measures.

Various new interviews and reports from industry workers believe that large scale live events won’t return until next year. Reports also predict that lowered ticket prices and socially-distant events could happen once live events resume.
