Coachella Festival has canceled its April 2021 dates

Some were expecting it, but others were hoping it wouldn’t happen. On Friday, it was confirmed that both Coachella and Stagecoach‘s April 2021 festival dates are canceled.

The news arrives shortly after Glastonbury Festival also canceled its 2021 event.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Coachella moved its 2020 festival to October before canceling it altogether. Coachella 2021 was set to happen on Apr. 9-11 and Apr.16-18, 2021. Now, the festival has been canceled once again. On Friday, Dr. Cameron Kaiser, the public health officer for Riverside County, confirmed the news on Twitter.

“Due to the pandemic, Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser today (Jan. 29) signed a public health order canceling Coachella Valley Music and Arts, Stagecoach Country Music festivals planned for April 2021. We look forward to when the events may return.”

At this time, no new dates for Coachella and Stagecoach have been announced. Stagecoach was set for Apr. 23-25, 2021. Some of the headliners scheduled for Coachella included Rage Against The MachineTravis ScottFrank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, and Run The Jewels among others.

Back in October, Rolling Stone reported that Coachella may look at moving the 2021 festival to this upcoming October. However, nothing has been confirmed so far.

Earlier this month, NIAID Director Dr. Fauci revealed he thinks concerts and events could resume this fall in the United States. However, this is all heavily dependent on COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

“If everything goes right, this is will occur some time in the fall of 2021,” Dr. Fauci said via the New York Times. “So that by the time we get to the early to mid-fall, you can have people feeling safe performing onstage as well as people in the audience.”

Even if the U.S. does reach herd immunity in this time frame, Fauci says concerts will probably be different from how they were before. Venues and theaters may still have to take safety precautions including social distancing and mask-wearing. These rules could stick around for some time as the rest of the country gets vaccinated.

Currently, the United States is seeing significant delays with its vaccine rollout. However, it looks like President Joe Biden reportedly plans to completely rework how the country has been administering vaccines.
