Corey Taylor says fans "don't have to like [him]" to love new Slipknot

Corey Taylor of Slipknot just discussed his new persona on the band’s upcoming album, and it turns out it’s based heavily in what people think of him.

The conversation went down for Heavy Metal Hill, where Taylor discussed public perception and the way the band’s music plays off the aesthetics.

He first discussed the sound of the forthcoming album WE ARE NOT YOUR KIND.

“It is really dark, the music falls between Iowa and Vol. 3. It is experimental, but heavy as hell. It’s aggressive, but has tons of melodies. I think people are really going to dig it.,” he said.

He then went into the way people have been perceiving him in recent years.

“The crazy thing I have noticed over the last couple years, I have seen a shift in the way people look at me,” he said. “I thought having an opinion was something that was cool, and now I’m becoming a meme.”

“I feel everyone is starting to turn on me, so I am using that to my advantage. I am like, ‘Alright you want a villain, I will give you a fucking villain,’” he continued. “That is kind of where I am in my life, not giving a shit. I am basically saying, ‘You don’t have to like me, but you are going to love me anyway.”

He also discussed the shift in the way the band prepares to tour the new record.

“We are trying to find new territory we have never done before, not just set-wise but visually from a live standpoint,” he continues. “We are constantly trying to see what can be explored artistically. This is where Clown is the best in the business, his mind is like a beehive of art. He is constantly trying to find ways to out-do everyone, it is pretty inspiring.”

Recently, Slipknot gave  their first live performance in nearly three years. You can see a video of that below.

Taylor also took to Twitter to give fans a little bit more information about the band’s forthcoming record WE ARE NOT YOUR KIND.

After thanking fans for their recent support, Taylor says the new record has influence from their previous works, such as Iowa. However, he also clarifies that WE ARE NOT YOUR KIND is an original piece in the band’s discography.

The record slated to be released Aug. 9 via Roadrunner Records. It’s available for preorder here.
