Detailing his turbulent upbringing, Taylor tells the show's host, Dr. Siri Sat Sam Singh, that he was sexually assaulted at the age of 10. The frontman says the incident of abuse occurred after his frequent family moves resulted in a difficulty with finding childhood friends.

“I was raped by someone in the neighborhood,” Taylor says. “There was really only one person to kind of hang out with … he was this 16 year old kid. And he would invite me over to his house to play music, and one day it became something else. I didn't tell anybody for a long time.”

The musician also opens up about his past suicide attempts, revealing a time he overdosed following a breakup. Taylor says it was his only serious attempt after two overdoses as a teenager.

“I only really seriously attempted suicide once,” Taylor tells the doctor. “I took a bunch of pills at my grandmother's house and just basically laid on the floor. And my ex-girlfriend’s mom stopped at my grandma’s house out of nowhere to check on me, to see how I was. [She] found me. An hour later, I’m drinking ipecac and throwing up into a bucket.”

Taylor credits fatherhood with helping him recover from his past trauma, indicating his gratitude in being able to provide a better life for his own children.

“You know, the only thing I ever wanted was to be a dad. … I have three amazing kids. I never want my kids to go through what I went through.”

“The darkness is some place I visit,” he says. “I don't live there.”
