CVS changes hold music for first time in 20 years, delights one psychiatrist

If you’ve ever called a CVS pharmacy before, you’ve probably heard their familiar hold music.

Well now, the company is finally changing it after having the same tune for nearly two decades.

In case you don’t remember, you can listen to the audio below to jog your memory.

One Harvard psychiatrist Steven Schlozman is probably the happiest person ever to hear this otherwise mundane news.

Schlozman, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, often has to make a lot of calls to pharmacies when dealing with prescriptions.

He has determined that in his career, he has probably called CVS for patients nearly three times a day and listened to the music for a minute and a half on average each time.

“I am 52 years old, so that means that I have spent 25 days out of my 18,980 days on this planet listening to that piano piece (called, incidentally, “Golden Dragon” — I Googled it while I was on hold). That’s a higher percentage of my days than I’d like,” he wrote in a post begging for the company to change the tune.

After Schlozman’s viral plead, CVS has agreed to change the music.

“CVS Pharmacy is in the process of updating the interactive voice response phone system in our stores, including the on-hold music. We expect this work to be completed later in 2019,” CVS said in a statement to WBUR.

Schlozman is apparently delighted by the change and that CVS listened to customer feedback.

It’s unclear what the new music will be, but we could probably make a few (more punk rock) suggestions.
