Daniel Radcliffe reveals who he wants to play in a ‘Harry Potter’ reboot

Daniel Radcliffe, who gained fame for playing the main character in the Harry Potter movie franchise, has revealed who he would want to play in a reboot—and it’s not who some may have expected. The 32-year-old actor suggested his goal isn’t to reprise his role as the “Boy Who Lived.”

“I would probably want to go with Sirius [Black] or [Remus] Lupin,” Radcliffe tells Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Those were always the two characters that I was like, ‘They’re great.'”

Radcliffe told Horowitz how his one-on-one interactions with Academy Award winner Gary Oldman and David Thewlis (Fargo, Big Mouth), who played Black and Lupin, respectively, had an effect on his decision.

“I’m obviously biased by my experience of filming those scenes with those people. They’re some of my favorite memories,” he says. “I thought those guys were really cool.”

In juxtaposition to his role as a young wizard, Radcliffe currently plays Reverend Ezekiel Brown on his journey across the infamous Oregon Trail in the third season of the anthology comedy series Miracle Workers. Radcliffe was joined by his fellow co-stars from the TBS television series, Karan Soni and Geraldine Viswanathan, for the podcast. The two shared their own hypothetical dream roles for a reboot.

“I want to play Hermione. That’s the character I related to the most,” Soni says. Viswanathan chose Hagrid for their shared love of animals.

Radcliffe further reminisced about his time on set with Oldman and Thewlis and how they helped him develop as an actor in an interview with Entertainment Tonight

“I have really, really fond memories of all my scenes with [Oldman] and [Thewlis],” he says. “They were some of the first scenes on the third and the fifth film where I started to feel like I was a young man who was just starting to figure out what acting was. They were pretty cool people to be around.”

Radcliffe also added that there were “no plans at the moment” for any special reunion events in the near future, as the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

“I’m in the Dominican Republic at the moment filming, and then I’m going to be busy,” he says. “[I’m] kind of working on bits and pieces until the end of the year. So yeah, I don’t know. I’m sure there will be some sort of celebration, but I don’t know if we will be getting together or anything. I’m sorry if that’s a bit of a disappointment to anyone.”

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there are any Harry Potter television series in development at HBO Max either, despite some rumors circulating in January. Warner Bros. and HBO Max both told the New York Post in a joint statement, “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”

All hope isn’t lost for a Harry Potter reboot sometime in the future, even if it doesn’t take the form of a reunion or HBO Max series. Radcliffe said he can’t imagine he will be the last to play Harry Potter in an interview with IGN in 2019.

“I’m sure there will be some other version of it. I know I’m not the last Harry Potter I’m gonna see in my lifetime—we’ve already got a few more [in the stage play The Cursed Child].

“It will be interesting to see how long those films stay… It feels like there’s a sacredness around them at the moment, but that’ll go. The shine will wear off at some point,” he adds. “It’ll be interesting if they reboot them and just do the films again or do a series. I’m fascinated to watch.”
