Dave Grohl clarifies Billie Eilish, Nirvana comparison

Following a lot of heat from the community, Dave Grohl has taken to Twitter to clarify the recent comments he made comparing Billie Eilish to Nirvana. However, in a direct transcription, it is clear that the Foo Fighters frontman wasn’t comparing her sound to the grunge band, but rather her ability to captivate an audience.

However, in a quote from Variety, it appeared as though the comparison was much more direct.

“My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish,” Variety‘s story reads. “The same thing is happening with her that happened with Nirvana in 1991. People say, ‘Is rock dead?’ When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, rock and roll is not close to dead!”

However, Foo Fighters were quick to do damage control as the band blamed “lazy paraphrasing that completely misses the point” for the false statement.

“My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish,” Grohl actually says in the transcription. “And what I’m seeing happening with my daughters is the same thing that happened to me at their age. My daughters are listening to Billie Eilish and they’re becoming themselves through her music. She totally connects to them. So we went to go see her play at the Wiltren, and that connection that she has with her audience is the same thing that was happening with Nirvana in 1991. The people in the audience know every word.”

Following that, Grohl also explains that rock music can go in a plethora of directions.

“And her music is so hard to define,” Grohl continues. “I don’t know what you call it! I try to describe her to people and I don’t know… I don’t even know what to call it. But it’s authentic. And I would call it rock n’ roll. So… I don’t care what sort of instruments you use to do it. When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, I’m like, ‘Shit man, rock n’ roll is not even close to being dead.’”

Earlier today, Grohl shared with his fans that he had underwent arm surgery. While the procedure was nothing serious, he did have to reschedule a few shows for the operation.
