Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear still play Nirvana songs together

It’s been almost 27 years since the tragic death of Kurt Cobain. Since then, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has forged a career in politics. Meanwhile, drummer Dave Grohl went on to start Foo Fighters with touring Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear.
Even though Cobain’s death marked the end of the band as we knew it, it turns out the three other members still relive their time in Nirvana with jam sessions.
Last week, Grohl and Smear reached a major milestone with Foo Fighters when they released their 10th studio album Medicine At Midnight. Earlier this week, the band stopped by The Howard Stern Show where Grohl opened up about the controversy surrounding Phoebe Bridgers‘ Saturday Night Live performance.
As well, both Grohl and Smear told Stern that they will occasionally get together with Novoselic and jam as Nirvana.
“Every once in a while, me and Krist and Dave get together and we do play as if we’re Nirvana,” Smear says. “So I don’t have to miss it — we do it. If we’re in the same town together, or whatever, we’ll get together and jam.”
As it turns out, the trio got together when Foo Fighters were recording Medicine At Midnight. According to Grohl, they even recorded some new material of their own. However, Grohl didn’t elaborate on what the recorded “stuff” actually is.
“We actually recorded some stuff.”
Elsewhere in the interview, both Grohl and Smear reveal that they don’t listen to or really talk about Nirvana because it’s too painful. In fact, Grohl recently found out his daughter knew all of the words to “Come As You Are” even though he’s never played it for her.
“I never played that record,” Grohl says. “We don’t talk about Nirvana and stuff, and she’s singing every word of the song. That, to me, that feels good.”
Now, this isn’t the first time Grohl has opened up about his time in Nirvana in recent months. Back in January, he detailed his early days in Washington state jamming with Cobain and Novoselic.
As well, he also revealed that he dreams about the trio waiting to play for an empty area. For Grohl, these dreams are a reminder of the time that has passed and the music Cobain created before his death.
“I still have dreams that we’re in Nirvana, that we’re still a band,” he told Classic Rock. “I still dream there’s any empty arena waiting for us to play. But I don’t sit down at home and run through ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit‘ by myself. It’s just a reminder that the person who is responsible for those beautiful songs is no longer with us. It’s bittersweet.”
More recently, Grohl also explained why he doesn’t care what Cobain would’ve thought of Foo Fighters. Earlier this week, Foo Fighters became one of the 16 artists nominated to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
