Dave Grohl listens to Lil Pump as a result of his own upbringing

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl isn’t Canadian, but he recently spent some time in Toronto interviewing his mom for a Canadian Music Week conference.

Dave and his mother Virginia Hanlon Grohl held an hour-plus discussion at the annual concert series in promotion of her novel, From Cradle to the Stage.

In the book, the elder Grohl discusses raising Dave and speaks with the mothers of musicians including Rush’s Geddy Lee, Amy Winehouse, Dr. Dre and Adam Levine among others. It’s also getting turned into a docuseries by Live Nation Productions with Endeavor Content.

“I made a lot of good friends in my new sorority,” Grohl says about her experience with fellow mothers of musicians. Dave added that when invites her over for dinner his mother has been known to hang up on him to get on a call with Dr. Dre.

Grohl also discussed difficulties travelling as an American, saying she pretends to be Canadian when she leaves the country. “I hope you don’t mind — it’s a little tough these days [being an American abroad].”

Grohl recalled knowing he wanted to be a musician from an early age and praised his mom for encouraging him on his path.

“She never told me to not listen to anything. When I was 14 I was listening to satanic death metal — she’d put on the Manhattan Transfer and I [would follow that up with Slayer’s 1986 classic] ‘Reign in Blood.’”

The musician also discussed his relationship with his children’s music taste and says he’s a fan of Lil Pump.

“I’ve got a kid who wants to be a musician and listens to Lil Pump, and I’m like, ‘Really?! I’ll need to have the talk,’” he said. “But [mom] never did it to me, so I don’t. And now I listen to Lil Pump.”

Grohl has previously praised young artists like Lil Pump and Billie Eilish, even comparing the latter to Nirvana.
