More delayed films could join ‘Artemis Fowl’ in going straight to Disney+

Following the updated release schedule that Disney put out last week, the company may be making even more changes to the releases of their upcoming films.

Due to COVID-19, Disney is making some big changes to their 2020, 2021 and 2022 release schedules. Last week, it was shared that the releases of movies including Artemis Fowl, Mulan, Black Widow and Marvel’s Phase 4 have been changed.

This week, Disney’s Chief Executive Bob Iger spoke with Barron’s. In his interview, he shares more details regarding the schedule changes and films that are going straight to Disney+

“There are some [films] we’ve decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, Artemis Fowl, that would have been released in theaters,” he shares.

The $125 million adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s novel is one of just a few films that have been fast-tracked to Disney+. This is in hopes of increasing subscriptions to the streaming platform.

“In some cases, we’ve moved things onto Disney+ faster than we would have,” Iger says. “Onward would be the biggest example. It was in theaters when this [COVID-19] happened.”

After including Onward on pay-per-view services for a couple of weeks, Disney quickly moved it to Disney+. Although some of these upcoming films were streamlined onto Disney+, Iger shares that for other films in production, we will simply have to wait.

“In terms of movies going ahead after Artemis Fowl, there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+,” he says. “But for the most part, a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots.”

For instance, The Personal History of David Copperfield, Antlers, Woman in the Window and The New Mutants are a few delayed films awaiting release slots.

As for those “tentpole” films, Disney has already announced the new release dates for many of them. Even though some have been moved only a few months, other films have had their release dates pushed back over a year.

At first, Mulan’s China release date was the only region impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. It has since been pushed back from March to July 24, the same day Jungle Cruise was set to be released. As a result, Jungle Cruise has been pushed back a full year to July 30, 2021. Similarly, the upcoming Indiana Jones film has been delayed a full year, now scheduled for a July 29, 2022 premiere.

Through all of this, there is some good and some bad news for Marvel fans. The good news is that the Black Panther sequel will keep its current release date of May 6, 2022. Captain Marvel 2 is arriving on July 8, 2022, two weeks earlier than originally scheduled.

However, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness is being pushed back from May 7 to November 5, 2021. As well, the highly-anticipated Thor: Love And Thunder, which will include the first LGBTQ+ Marvel hero, is also being delayed to February 18, 2022.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Disney insiders emphasized that due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, all of these upcoming release dates could be shifted if needed.
