This 'Detective Pikachu' scene made The Pokémon Company uncomfortable

Detective Pikachu is finally in theaters and seems to be winning over audiences everywhere. However, it looks like The Pokémon Company was not a big fan of one scene in particular that took place during the film.

Director Rob Letterman sat down with Kotaku to discuss how important it was for the film to be done right.

“We worked closely with The Pokémon Company, and the original creators and original designers,” Letterman says. “We got notes, feedback—I mean, very detailed notes. We collaborated with them directly on this movie because we want to get it right.”

The film even went as far as to have a Pokémon expert on hand during filming.

“One time, I called Bulbasaur ‘he’ in a scene,” says Kathryn Newton, who plays Lucy in the movie. “And he [the Pokémon expert] said, ‘Actually, you can’t call him a ‘he.’ He’s ‘it.’ Genderless. Psyduck is a he. So, there are these really specific things that we cared about, and we hoped that Pokémon experts and just fans [care, too].”

In a separate interview with TIME, the film’s creative team sat down to dish the details behind the film, including what scene The Pokémon Company didn’t seem too fond of.

Erik Nordby, the visual effects supervisor, and Ravi Bansal, the film’s art director revealed how they made that creepy, gross scene with Lickitung work.

“We built that tongue in reality with a big chunk of latex,” Nordby explains. “It’s completely gross, but we had to have something to wipe Justice Smith’s face with [the actor gets licked by Lickitung in one scene].”

He also goes on to share that the Lickitung scene was not one the company was too fond of.

“For something to feel real, it has to have real world grit and texture. But the Pokémon Company would see that and think it was dirty. We had to walk them through a whole series of slides and build the trust that we weren’t going to make these things disturbingly dirty.

I wouldn’t say that [the scene with Lickitung] was the Pokémon Company’s favorite scene in the movie. That’s one where we got right up to the edge of what they would be comfortable with.”
