Ryan Reynolds stars as the titular character, even though many people wanted Danny DeVito to take on the role, including the filmmakers themselves.

Reynolds recently released a hilarious video of how he’s prepared for his role as the character.

“I lived and breathed and became the character. I spent the entire year as Detective Pikachu,” Reynolds says. “Every second of my energy is spent making this character come alive.”

The video escalates when Reynolds talks about the lengths he went to in order to become his character.

“I was on my way to pick up my daughters from school when I heard I got the role. Well, I didn’t show up at school because, Detective Pikachu, he doesn’t know who those girls are,” Reynolds says.

“They’re our daughters. He just left them,” his wife Blake Lively says after Reynold’s anecdote.

You can see that video below.

In addition to Reynolds, Suki Waterhouse, Rita Ora, Bill Nighy and Smith will also appear in the film. Smith had a packed year after his lead role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story is set into motion when Goodman’s father is kidnapped, forcing him to team up with Detective Pikachu to find him.

To make matters more chaotic, Goodman is the only human who can understand Pikachu talk.

Goosebumps director Rob Letterman helmed the project, which began filming in London around mid-January of last year.

In other news, the film recently revived the Pokemon trading card ticket tradition.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu premieres in theaters May 10. You can see both trailers for the film below.
