Electric Century

Back in April, Electric Century confirmed they have a new graphic novel and album on the way. The graphic novel is titled Electric Century and is due out this fall through Z2 Comics. As well, the record will be the first for Electric Century since 2017’s For The Night To Control.

Now, the first page from the highly-anticipated Electric Century graphic novel has been released.

Electric Century consists of My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way and Sleep Station’s David Debiak. The band formed following MCR’s disbandment in 2014.

The upcoming Electric Century graphic novel is a collaboration between Way and Shaun Simon who worked together in the past on DC’s Young Animal‘s Collapser. As well, art for Electric Century is by Toby Cypress.

Simon is also known for his work alongside Gerard Way. Currently, the duo is working on the new Killyjoys comic National Anthem.

I am thrilled to announce a very special @electriccentury project that has been years in the making! I had the privilege of teaming up with some of my closest friends to make something that has vastly exceeded my wildest expectations. This venture combines two of the things I love the most- music and comics into one. First, @dvdebiak and I got to make an EC album with the one and only @raytoro as our producer! Second, Shaun Simon and I introduce you to the hypnotic world of Electric Century in a graphic novel, with the beautifully mind-bending art of Toby Cypress @punkrockjazz bringing it all to life. I can’t wait for you all to take the journey with us in the fall. And a very special thank you to @z2comics for helping to make this happen

“The story centers on former sitcom star Johnny Ashford who is arrested after driving drunk,” the graphic novel’s description says. “Ashford’s aspiring actress girlfriend bails him out and he begins seeing a hypnotherapist. Dr. Evers sends Johnny to his “happy place” — 1980’s Atlantic City. Where, he relives his childhood on the boardwalk, hardly noticing shadowy specters all around.”

“Johnny’s addiction shifts from alcohol to his hypnotic trips to the boardwalk and the Electric Century casino, which satisfies his desire for fame. He discovers a way to stay there. In the real world, his girlfriend’s search for him leads her to Dr. Evers, who offers her a free session, and Johnny meets her on a beach by the boardwalk—her own ‘happy place.’ Johnny brings her to his boardwalk, only to discover its true nature. Johnny must find a way to save himself and his girlfriend, and escape the Electric Century.”

Now, the first page from the new Electric Century graphic novel is here. This week, Z2 Comics shared the page which reveals what is in store for the forthcoming graphic novel.

Following the graphic novel’s announcement earlier this year, Mikey Way expressed his excitement for the new project.

“I’m delighted to announce this book!” he said. “The genesis of the story has been many years in the making, created with some of my closest friends. Getting to bring the two things I am most passionate about together — comics & music — has been exciting, challenging and unbelievably rewarding. I’ve been waiting to tell this type of story about my home state for a long time. I truly hope everyone enjoys it.”

As well, Way recently opened up about the graphic novel’s corresponding music. Although not much information has been shared yet, Way told Upset about fans can expect to hear on the new album.

“With Electric Century, I always strive to celebrate a few periods of time in my musical life,” he says. “When I was a kid, 80s new-wave dominated the radio, and in my teens, Britpop ruled my world, and both were deeply important to me. With Electric Century I’m always chasing the feelings I felt when I listen to my favourite pieces of each.”

Way further says that both he and Debiak have different musical influences. Together, however, they bring those influences together and create Electric Century’s unique sound.

“I know Dave has influences he feels that same way about, and those are ever-present on the album as well,” Way continues. “He’s a huge fan of Elbow, The Beatles and Springsteen. We have tons of musical commonality, some differences – and from that Electric Century songs are born.”

Electric Century is available for preorder here. The graphic novel and accompanying full-length record will be hitting comic shops, retailers and record stores this fall.
