Here’s why Emmure won’t tell you what their new single is about

It looks like fans will get their hands on a new Emmure album sooner than anticipated. On Friday, Emmure announced that their new 14-track album Hindsight will be released this summer. The album arrives onto streaming services June 26 and physical copies will be available on July 24.

To celebrate Hindsight‘s announcement, Emmure have also released a new single called “Uncontrollable Descent” that they want fans to interpret for themselves.

Over the past few months, Emmure fans have gotten a glimpse into what Hindsight will sound like. Last October, the band put out “Pigs Ear,” the first track to be released since their 2017 album Look At Yourself. “Gypsy Disco” was the second track to be released from Hindsight back in March.

In February, lead vocalist Frankie Palmeri revealed that he “regrets almost every lyric [he’s] ever written.” He talked in-depth on Twitter about the past songs he has created and responded to a number of fans’ tweets.

Now, it seems like Palmeri and Emmure are turning over a new leaf with their music. On Friday, they released another new track off of their forthcoming album that was produced by WZRD BLD aka Drew Fulk (Dance Gavin Dance, Motionless In White, Bad Wolves).

“Uncontrollable Descent” is the closing track on the 14-song album. Its release is helping to build more anticipation around Hindsight‘s summer release. However, Palmeri prefers to keep the meaning behind the new single open to interpretation.

“The label asked me to attach a quote about the new album and this new single so that there can be some words to chew on as this press release goes out,” Palmari says. “I am not sure what to say. I simply hope the fans enjoy the song as much as we do and look forward to the full album releasing this year. Beyond that, I don’t believe in explaining what the music is supposed to be about.”

For the band, they want fans who listen to Hindsight to interpret the songs for themselves. Through this, Emmure hope that listeners can make their own meanings about what the album is about.

“I consider it creatively bankrupt to rob people of a chance to experience, dissect and create their own unique ownership of what a song potentially represents to them,” he continues. “I want people to hear the music and take away whatever feeling they want. If an artist is outright telling you why a song or album was written, not only do I personally find it pretentious, but they might as well spoon feed you your meals. [And] pick out your clothes for you, since you’re clearly incapable of thinking for yourself. What makes explaining it even worse than what I already mentioned, is that the message within is literally and figuratively already spelled out for you. So if you can’t figure it out or at the very least surmise your own explanation, then you’re better off just reading a dictionary if you’re too lazy discover the meaning in something for yourself.”
