Emoji license plates could happen in the US with new proposed bill

Last year we reported that emoji license plates were coming to Queensland, Australia. No, emoji license plates is not the name of some alt-rock group. We meant real emoji’s on real license plates. Well, now it seems they may be coming to the United States.

A new piece of legislation before the Virginia House of Delegates allows drivers to add one of six emoji to their license plate. The bill was introduced by Rep. Rebecca White, a Democrat from Windsor, Vermont.

According to the text within the bill, people could add the emoji to the plate next to the number assigned by the Department of Motor Vehicles or they can make it one of the numbers assigned as a vanity plate.

The bill states that people will have the option to choose one out of six emojis. The emojis have yet to be specified but Queensland has the options of the smiling, laughing, winking, “love” or sunglasses emoji. The cost per plate in Australia is roughly $336. Vanity plates in the United States range in price from $10-$100. They also have renewal fees of up to $80 but no price is stated yet.

Royal Automobile Club of Queensland spokesperson Rebecca Michael said the change would be no different from people adding their favorite sports team logo to their plates.

“For quite some time we’ve seen that you can support your favorite team or your favorite town with a symbol on your number plate,” Michael said. “And using an emoji is no different.”

Several states already allow for punctuation such as question marks and ampersands to be included on license plates. We don’t see any problem with the allowance of emojis on license plates. We expect that the emojis selected will be similar to those that Australia has which are all family-friendly. Unfortunately, that means things like the peach or pile of poop will most likely not be allowed.
