New emojis for 2019 include yawns, dogs and more blood

A yawning face, service and guide dogs, and a lone drop of blood that’s being called the “period emoji” by a girls’ rights group are just three of the new emojis found in Unicode’s official 2019 update of the ubiquitous telecom ideograms.

It’s set to roll out this spring, CNN reports, and various smartphone operating systems and mobile apps are expected to comply shortly thereafter. So, don’t worry, foodies! Very soon, you’ll be able to show off a tasty looking falafel emoji.

But that’s not the only totally awesome emoji coming in Unicode 12.0, the new version of the Unicode Standard planned for release March 5. (See the full list from Emojipedia right here.) There’s also that aforementioned drop of blood.

Indeed, the “period emoji,” as pointed out by the Daily Mirror, was reportedly spearheaded into subsistence by children and girls’ watchdog Plan International U.K. as a way to end the stigma surrounding menstruation, a point echoed by Mashable.

Plan International U.K.’s campaign for the new drop of blood emoji was backed by 55,000 people in the awareness group’s call to start “busting taboos around menstruation and calling for a period emoji to keyboards around the world.”

“For years we’ve obsessively silenced and euphemised periods,” says Lucy Russell, Head of Girls’ Rights & Youth at the non-profit organization. “As experts in girls’ rights, we know that this has a negative impact on girls; girls feel embarrassed to talk about their periods, they’re missing out, and they can suffer health implications as a consequence.”

Of course, there was already the syringe emoji, which shows the named medical instrument “containing what appears to be blood,” per Emojipedia. But this is the first time that a solitary drop of blood is getting its own emoji.
