No other band are capable of hiding in plain sight quite like Green Day. Over the past few years the band have performed under a few different aliases ranging from the Network to Foxboro Hot Tubs. This week the band are at it again, performing a secret show in San Francisco under the name the Coverups.
Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were joined by touring guitarist Jason White, audio engineer Chris Dugan and tour manager Bill Schneider to create a cover band so appropriately billed as the Coverups.
The band took the stage at Thee Parkside this past Thursday performing covers that ranged from the Replacements to David Bowie.
The Coverups took the stage around 11 p.m., kicking off their set in the tiny venue with the Replacement's "Color Me Impressed." Their set included 90 minutes of covers that ranged over a multitude of genres and included various hits such as Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" and David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust."
Green Day drummer Tre Cool may not be an official member of the Coverups, but that didn't stop him from joining the band for the Ramones' "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker."
The crowd fed off the energy of this "up-and-coming" band, starting a few circle pits with one brave fan managing to crowdsurf across the small, 100-capacity venue. One fan offered Armstrong an adhesive moustache which he kept on throughout the band's cover of "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones. Dirnt was sporting a pretty wild beard, jokingly telling fans "No requests!" any time an attempt was made to get the band to play a Green Day track.
Fans in attendance were all given a raffle ticket as they entered the show, with a few lucky ones taking home some interesting items that included a toy airplane, a collection of Kiss records and even a double-necked guitar.
The night ended with the Who's "A Quick One He's Away" leaving fans to wonder... did that really just happen?
It seems like Green Day won't stop being typical Green Day anytime soon, but we can't help but wonder—who will Green Day show up as next?
