In Memoriam: Former Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr

March 09 2011, 12:38 PM EST By Tim Karan

Ex-Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr was found dead yesterday in a home near downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. He was 44. Police responded to a call on Tuesday but say a cause of death is unknown at this time. It also is wasn't clear who made the 911 call or who owns the home. Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Shawn Josephson says Starr was arrested last month on suspicion of possession of medications without a required prescription.

Starr was one of the original members of the Seattle grunge outfit, and played on the band's first two albums—1990's Facelift and 1992's Dirt. He left the band in 1993 while AIC were on tour with Ozzy Osbourne. Starr appeared on the third season of VH1's Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2009.

Original vocalist Layne Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, leaving only two members of the original lineup—Jerry Cantrell (guitar/vocals) and Sean Kinney (drums)—surviving today. A statement was released on their behalf reading: "Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy—and the privacy of Mike's family —during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with Mike's family."

Our condolences to Starr's family, friends and fans.
