Watch Evanescence give “Cruel Summer” an acoustic spin

Evanescence have been managing to stay busy over the past few months. Along with announcing that their new album The Bitter Truth will be released later this year, the band also recently released their new song “Wasted On You.”

Now, Evanescence have shared a video of Amy Lee and Troy McLawhorn covering the classic pop hit “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues on, some cities are moving into different phases out of lockdown. For the members of Evanescence, however, it appears that they are still taking social distancing measures.

On June 11, Evanescence shared their “Cruel Summer” cover video. The cover was recorded while in isolation and both Lee and McLawhorn can be seen performing separately in their homes.

With Lee on vocals and piano and McLawhorn on guitar, the duo manages to transform the classic 1984 hit by Bananarama. Featuring Lee’s signature vocals and Evanescence’s distinct sound, “Cruel Summer” is transformed into a completely new song.

The cover video was originally recorded for Germany’s MagentaMusik 360. Following the performance, Lee says that “Cruel Summer” is just one of many songs that have been given a new meaning during this time.

“I don’t know about you guys, but so many songs have seemed to have taken on a new and deeper meaning during this time, and that’s one of those for me,” she shares.

Lee also says that she is looking forward to playing shows again soon once coronavirus has been contained. Recent reports predict that large scale live events won’t resume until the latter part of 2021.

“I hope you enjoyed it,” she says. “I hope you enjoyed our little performance. We can’t wait to play for you live in the flesh again. Until then, stay safe, be well and take care. We love you.”

Evanescence plan to release The Bitter Truth some time in 2020. At this moment, the band have not shared if the coronavirus pandemic has caused the album to be delayed.
