AP Tour headliners make a right into 'Wrong Turn 5'
When they're done rocking your face off, the bands on the AP Tour like to kick back and chill out. And what's more appropriate for Halloween than getting the hell scared out of you with a scary movie. The Ghost Inside’s Jim Riley and Miss May I's Levi Benton did just that recently with Wrong Turn 5, which was released on Blu-Ray and DVD October 23. Usually, the writers do the reviewing here at AP, but we wanted to turn the tables and let the artists have a go at it this time. JIM RILEY, THE GHOST INSIDE
I'm a big fan of the horror genre, an obsession that started when I was four years old and my dad inadvertently let me watch The Howling. The sense of being “afraid of the boogie man” has never left me, and I continue to live for the next scary movie. As I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate the subgenres within horror movies. There are the classic franchises like Halloween, Friday The 13th and Nightmare On Elm Street; movies that dive into the occult like The Exorcist and The Omen; and in more recent years, terror movies like Hostel, Saw and The Strangers. But I've always been drawn to what I consider “scary movies,” stuff like Evil Dead and Cabin Fever. From the opening scenes, this is exactly the category where Wrong Turn 5 fell for me. Whenever I'm watching the fifth part of a franchise, I'm instantly skeptical. But WT5 combines exactly what I need: a little bit of sex, a little bit of drugs and a whole heap of heads rolling. The movie is a nonstop bloodbath. While the special effects aren't groundbreaking, they get the job done. The story moves along at just the right speed: You get a good balance of plot and gore, and to be honest, if you're watching the movie to begin with, isn't that exactly what you want? Overall, I found the movie to be fun, entertaining and a great way to spend 90 minutes with my friends, splitting our time between laughing and going, “Ewwww, gross!”
LEVI BENTON, MISS MAY I
First off, I am a huge fan of the Wrong Turn films, so going into this I was excited for yet another slasher. Right off the bat, it's action-packed—not the kind of action you’re thinking, but some good horror-movie sex appeal—so I was hooked. After the first thrill of the film, I was pretty much hooked. This time though, I liked how the contemporary backdrop of the world was tied into the story so it gave the film a more realistic “Holy crap, this could happen” feel. The character elimination is not what you would ever expect. It was so interesting and breathtaking, and the intense special effects made me cringe. Overall, I didn't expect the ending—which I usually can call out—and that made it a great late-night slasher to enjoy! alt
