The Chicago quartet—vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz, guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley—saw their breakout 2003’s debut full-length Take This To Your Grave, released on Fueled By Ramen, practically paved the way for a new pop-punk movement in the early ‘00s. The band went on to sign to  Island Def Jam, where they released three additional full-lengths: From Under The Cork Tree (2005), Infinity On High (2007) and Folie a Deux (2008), along with a greatest hits compilation, Believers Never Die (2009) and a live album Live In Phoenix (2008).

In 2009, the band’s momentum halted and they announced an “indefinite hiatus” that would follow their tour with Blink-182, Panic! At The Disco and Weezer. They claimed they needed time to “decompress,” but never diminished hopes that they would return some day.

“Everybody wants us to say that we’re breaking up, but we’re just trying to figure things out, ” Stump told Ultimate-Guitar in 2009. “We’ve been doing that for seven years hardcore. I think it’s a way for us as a band to kind of decompress. It will all work out.”

During FOB’s hiatus, the band members pursued different projects. Stump released  an EP, Truant Wave and his debut solo album, Soul Punk in 2011. Wentz started a reggae-rock project with singer Bebe Rexha called Black Cards, who toured but released no official recordings. Trohman formed the Damned Things with members of Anthrax and Every Time I Die, releasing 2010’s Ironiclast as well as teaming up with bassist Josh Newton (ETID, Shiner, Reggie And The Full Effect) in the post-punk outfit With Knives. In addition to playing with Trohman in Damned Things, Hurley embraced his hardcore roots in Enabler and FocusedxMinds and gigging with Earth Crisis.

Fall Out Boy made their AP cover debut in issue #193 (August 2004) and have since graced the cover on four other occasions including October 2005 (AP 207), February 2007 (AP 223) and December 2008 (AP 245).

With this announcement and the impending tenth anniversary of Take This To Your Grave, the band’s return to the spotlight–based upon fan reaction–propels their reconvening to be one of the most exciting music events of 2013.
