'Final Fantasy VII' remake will see "dramatic changes," says game director

The gaming community lost its collective mind at E3 this year when Sony announced during their press conference that the critically-acclaimed original PlayStation title Final Fantasy VII would see a full HD remake on the current console generation. Given the short nature of the teaser trailer, many fans were left speculating how true to the original the upcoming remake will be. Today, we have confirmation from game director Tetsuya Nomura that the remake will see the game go through “dramatic changes.”

Nomura remains cryptic in his interview with Official Playstation Magazine, but confirms the battle system in the remake will differ from the original version. However, Nomura goes on to confirm that the system will be distinctly “recognizable;” all of the RPG elements should stay in tact, but differ in the details. In his own words:

…of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable.
