Turns out Molly Weasley is not the only one who can't tell Fred and George apart. James and Oliver Phelps weren't clear which of the twins they were playing when the actors were first cast in Harry Potter.

“We’d just finished a read through [after landing the roles]. So we had scripts, but we still didn’t know who was who,” Oliver told Cosmopolitan UK.

“We were saying to each other, ‘We need to find out who’s playing who’. So we saw casting director Janet [Hirshenson] and said, ‘Quick question. Who’s Fred and who’s George?’ And she kind of laughed it off and said, ‘Oh, good one’. And we said, ‘No really, who’s who?’.

The casting director wasn't sure about the answer and had to discuss it with author JK Rowling, director Chris Columbus and producer David Heyman. Eventually, they decided James was playing Fred and Oliver would be George.

What they never figured out is if the roles had already been planned or if it was a last minute decision.

The actor also explained that, although they played a few pranks on set to confuse people, the twins never really swapped characters during scenes. “James and I were always scared to death that if we did, we’d get caught!” He explained.
