Fyre Festival’s Billy McFarland is using coronavirus to try to leave prison

A number of celebrity criminals have been making requests for early release from prison over the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and Fyre Festival‘s founder Billy McFarland is the latest to make such a request.

According to TMZ, his lawyers are arguing the Ohio prison he’s staying at is a hotspot for the virus and he should be released early.

Other celebrity criminals including Bill Cosby, R. Kelly and rapper Tekashi 6ix 9ine have also requested early release over the virus.

6ix 9ine was granted this after initially being denied. He cites his asthma as the reason for leaving. His release date was supposed to be on July 31 but he will now remain under house arrest for the next four months. He will also be subject to electronic monitoring.

Now, McFarland is testing his luck.

He’s similarly arguing his asthma as a reason to leave along with allergies and heart issues. His legal team is also using 6ix 9ine’s release as a precedent for the request.

The Elkton, Ohio prison he’s housing in saw a fourth inmate die from the virus just yesterday.

The Fyre Festival founder’s prison sentence is supposed to see him behind bars until 2023 but he is eligible for house arrest as early as 2021.

McFarland wrote a letter to a United States District Court judge placing the request.

“The motion outlines the seriousness of the situation at FCI Elkton, the health risks that I’m exposed to by being here, and how I can contribute positively via home detention.”
