Gerard Way recalls the awkward time he first met Stan Lee

According to Gerard Way, the first time that he ever met Stan Lee was in an airport during My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge era. However, the interaction he and Lee had was awkward to say the least.

In an interview with NME, Way reveals that when he asked for Lee to sign his sketchbook, the comic book legend thought he was approaching him to ask for a job.

“Really early on in the band days, second album era, I went up to him in baggage claim at the airport and he signed my sketchbook,” Way says. “As soon as he saw my sketchbook, he was like, ‘I can’t get you a job kid…’ and because my tour manager was standing next to me, he was like, ‘No, he’s good, he’s in a rock band. He’s not looking to get into comics!’ And I laughed along, but really I was totally looking to get into comics!”

Since Way transitioned into the comic book world, he has met Lee on separate occasions.

After Lee passed, Way even shared a photo of the creator to his Instagram.

That said, we wonder if Lee ever recognized Way from their first interaction.

Throughout the interview, Way reminisces about his favorite comic book shop and the first comic that made him emotional.
