Gerard Way has plenty of ‘Umbrella Academy’ spinoff ideas after Vol. 4

On Wednesday, Gerard Way released the first installment of You Look Like Death, a spinoff series based on Umbrella Academy misfit Klaus Hargreeves.

Now, Way has confirmed that he has plenty of ideas for future Umbrella Academy spinoffs. However, the Umbrella Academy Vol. 4 is next on his to-do list.

Back in July, Way revealed that he was working on a spinoff comic series all about Klaus. For Way, Klaus’ backstory has also been particularly interesting to him and he decided it was time to expand on it.

Written by Way and Shaun Simon and illustrated by I.N.J. Culbard, You Look Like Death is presented as a six-issue miniseries. The story follows an 18-year-old Klaus as he deals with his ongoing recklessness and drug use. Due to his behavior, he is eventually kicked of out the Academy by his father Sir Reginald Hargreeves. The comic follows his life as he deals with being excommunicated from his family and penniless without his allowance.

Following the announcement of You Look Like Death, Way revealed that more Umbrella Academy spinoffs could happen in the future.

“There are other ideas for sure as far as Umbrella Academy siblings getting their own series, all of them very different from each other,” he said. “And there are other writers and creators I want to work with on those, but I wanted to bring the focus back to the main Umbrella Academy story arc.”

Now, Way is further elaborating on his writing plans. On Thursday, he shared a lengthy statement regarding You Look Like Death‘s release. He also confirmed that he has plenty of spinoff ideas for the future.

“This is the first limited series in what will hopefully be multiple series exploring some of the characters in the Umbrella Academy world,” he says.

Way explains that he decided to make You Look Like Death the first spinoff due to Klaus’ complicated backstory.

“Of all the siblings, Klaus was the first one I felt I already knew a lot about his backstory and wanted to explore it,” he continues. “Something about those 10 years between getting kicked out of the house and the events of Apocalypse Suite really interested me. I felt like Klaus had gotten into a whole bunch of trouble. And his addictions really started to take hold of him.”

He also says that You Look Like Death is a lot different than the main Umbrella Academy series. Even though the first installment has just been released, Way and Simon already have ideas for more Klaus-centric comics.

“I really enjoyed the whole process,” he says. “It’s a very different kind of book from the main UA book and Shaun and I already have an idea for Klaus’ next adventure.”

For now, however, Way is dedicating his time to the next Umbrella Academy installment. Way first revealed he was working on Vol. 4 back in May.

“But first, we’ll get Umbrella Academy Volume 4, which I have been writing for a little while now,” he reveals. “Take care and enjoy your read.”

Volume 4 of Umbrella Academy will follow up Hotel Oblivion which debuted last year. The third volume faced lengthy delays as its creation was around the time Way was working on getting back into music and My Chemical Romance. It took about a decade from being announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2009 to be fully released.

More recently, the Netflix adaptation of the comic series premiered its second season back in July. Following its release, the show was in Netflix’s 10 ten list for a staggering 14 days.
