Golden Globes sparks first meme of 2019, Fiji Water Girl

We’re officially in full swing for awards season. The 76th Golden Globes kicked it all off as the first major show of the year, and we already have our first meme. While there were plenty of celebrities gracing the carpet, the Fiji Water Girl was the true show-stealer.

The Fiji Water Girl, also known as model/actress Kelleth Cuthbert, became the first official meme of 2019. Cuthbert was seen striking poses throughout the night behind some of the industry’s biggest names.

Not only was she posing, but she was serving a total mood. So, of course, a meme was born almost instantly.

Glamour was able to track down Cuthbert after the awards where they asked her about her newfound meme fame. She was confused and overwhelmed by the instant exposure, but admits she finds it entertaining at the same time.

“I do love a good meme, so I think it’s incredibly ironic and funny that I’m one now,” she says. “The first meme of 2019, apparently! My husband is laughing very hard about all of this.”

“This is something I would go viral for,” she continues. “I feel like I’ve been photobombing people since I was a kid.”

Cuthbert explains she caught wind that Fiji was going viral during the show, but at the time, she didn’t realize it was because of her. People soon began asking her for selfies (but no celebrities were included).

One of her agents tagged her in the meme, and she soon called her mom, as one does when they go viral.

“One of my print agents tagged me in a meme of myself,” she says, with a laugh. “I called my mom on my break, and she was already laughing when she picked up the phone. My parents are not very hip to things going on, so the fact that they had already received this information says a lot about how viral it already went.”

As for her location and expression, Cuthbert explains it was her “event persona.”

“I just stand where I’m told, wherever there is an opening.” Cuthbert tells Glamour as she moved around to pass out water. “Everyone has their work or event persona. You try to look at least somewhat pleasant and not have too much resting bitch face. You have to look somewhat friendly and happy to be engaging with people.”

“Sometimes you’re caught between a lot of cameras, so there’s a lot of photographers at different angles,” she continues. “You’re just kind of trapped sometimes. See that’s the thing: I feel like I was looking away, but sometimes I was looking so I could move out of the way.”
