World’s gothest penguin may be the only one in existence

A week ago, an all-black Emperor penguin was captured for the first time by the BBC. According to Newsweek, the creature may be the rarest of its species.

Aside from only a few white feathers, the penguin is entirely black, making it the most goth bird in all of Antarctica.

“Wow. That looks so bizarre I can’t even believe it,” Ornithologist Allan Baker says in a story with Newsweek. “It’s a one in a zillion kind of mutation somewhere. The animal has lost control of its pigmentation patterns. Presumably, it’s some kind of mutation.”

According to BBC, the mutation melanism is the reason for the penguin to be almost entirely black. Unfortunately, this mutation is actually harmful to the penguin because it makes it easier for him to be seen by predators.

However, while this goth penguin may not be the first of its kind, it is the only one that has been known to survive all the way to adulthood.

Nonetheless, the goth penguin isn’t the only mainstream science revelation that has taken on a scene persona. Just a few weeks ago, the Opportunity Mars rover’s last words were almost too emo even for us.

After a dust storm knocked the rover out, NASA’s creation mustered up the power to say, “My battery is low and it’s getting dark.”

“Even though it’s a machine and we’re saying goodbye, it’s still very hard and very poignant, but we had to do that.” Project Manager John Callas says of the rover’s passing. We came to that point.”
