Green Day song is like “a unicorn falling out of the sky,” Billie Joe says

We’re still on cloud nine after Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer announced their Hella Mega tour. As we impatiently await this massive stadium tour in 2020, we at least have new music to hype us up and hold us over.

One of those tracks is Green Day’s “Father Of All…” which Billie Joe Armstrong compares to “a unicorn falling out of the sky.”

In addition to the fire announcements, Green Day are issuing “Father Of All…” the lead track from their thirteenth studio record of the same name. The followup to 2016’s Revolution Radio is slated for release February 7, 2020 via Reprise/Warner with preorders available here.

“I knew I wanted to do something different,” Armstrong tells Rolling Stone in regards to his search for a new sound. “I’d always loved British mod music from the Sixties, but I wanted to go to where the source was and see if I could put [soul] through the Green Day filter. It was a lot of trial and error, a lot of pulling my fucking hair out.”

Armstrong was at home jamming with drummer Tre Cool when Cool began to play “a nasty fucking beat.” It didn’t take long for Armstrong to then come up with the title.

“I told my engineer, ‘I might look like a fucking idiot, but bear with me,’” Armstrong explains.

The song, he says “was like a unicorn falling out of the sky: ‘I don’t know what this is, I don’t know how I did it, but this is the direction I’m headed.’ ”
