It happened Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where Morrissey and the Sex Pistols‘ Steve Jones also joined the Green Day guitarist/vocalist in celebrating the music and magic of New York punk legends the Ramones.

“They seemed like a family,” Armstrong recalled to Forbes of the defining punk rock act, “with the name and a gang or something like the Del-Lords or some kind of New York bunch of barbarians that could wield around a baseball bat.”

But was there a personally defining moment for Billie Joe when it comes to the Ramones’ rock’n’roll legacy? He says his early memories of the band playing on television kicked off the group’s massive influence in his mind.

“When I was a kid I watched on late night TV was a show they were playing in Ann Arbor and if you look it up it’s on YouTube,” Armstrong recalls. “They sounded so f**king good and the energy in the crowd was so completely into it.”
