The long-awaited Hella Mega tour finally kicked off in Dallas with Green Day performing a surprise cover of KISS’ chart-topping 1975 classic “Rock And Roll All Nite.”

The performance earned a shoutout from the band on Twitter.

Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons both posted 30-second clips of the performance and tweeted their gratitude for the band.

“Tonight in Dallas!” Stanley tweeted. “Another reason to love Green Day!”

The sold-out stadium concert was the first stop of the tour but served as Green Day’s second live performance of the summer. On July 20, the band made their first back-from-quarantine appearance, when they played a sold-out surprise set to a crowd of roughly 1,800 people.

The July 20 set wasn’t the first surprise show the band have done—nor was “Rock And Roll All Nite” their first cover. Billie Joe Armstrong and co. spent the course of the pandemic recording No Fun Mondays, a 14-track covers LP, which included songs such as “Corpus Christi” and “Manic Monday.”

In December 2019, the band put on an intimate secret show at a small town in California under the moniker the Coverups. Unlike their recent surprise concert, the 2019 performance included a series of covers from punk legends such as Ramones and Misfits.

Weezer and Fall Out Boy also headlined the highly anticipated inaugural concert. Although it’s been a while since Fall Out Boy put out their 2019 album, Believers Never Die (Volume Two), Weezer released their 14th and 15th albums, OK Human and Van Weezer, over the course of 2021. No strangers to cover material themselves, Weezer paid tribute to another artist by performing their chart-topping cover of “Africa” by Toto

All three bands had nothing but good things to say about the sold-out show.

Though the Hella Mega tour was postponed for nearly two years, the run is  rapidly selling out dates. The tour has also launched a giveaway to win a trip to see the band at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles.

Partnering with their own East Bay company Oakland Coffee Works, Green Day made a raffle giving away round-trip airfare, two tickets and two nights of deluxe hotel accommodations amongst other prizes. You can enter the raffle here.
