Green Day poke fun at social media absorption in new "Oh Yeah!" video

Green Day just dropped their newest single off their upcoming album Father Of All… The single is titled “Oh Yeah!” and has been teased this previous week. The accompanying music video pokes fun at modern interactions due to the influence of technology.

Green Day’s Father Of All… releases on Feb. 7. The previous two singles include the title track “Father Of All…” and “Ready, Fire Aim.”

The video starts as a mock tutorial with drummer Tre Cool showing us how to play the drums for ” Oh Yeah!” The man watching the video is distracted and hits Billie Joe Armstrong in his car. For the rest of the time, we see numerous absurd interactions with people, all stemming from their absorption into technology.

Everyone is constantly filming themselves, except for bassist Mike Dirnt, who poses as a security guard. The joke here is that he’s too distracted with his phone to notice the vandalism happening on the monitor in front of him. We see a couple share an intimate moment on a date before immediately looking at their phones again and communicating with other people about being bored or how they miss them.

Armstrong pokes fun at the absurdity with the hook “Everybody is a star//Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low.” Watch the video for Green Day’s “Oh Yeah!” below.

“Oh Yeah! Lyrics

I’m in a crowd full of angels and demons
I’m looking out for the jingoes and heathens
Nobody move and nobody gonna get hurt
Reach for the sky with your face in the dirt

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low
Everybody got a scar
Ain’t it funny how we’re running out of hope?

Yeah oh yeah oh yeah
Yeah oh yeah oh yeah

I got blood on my hands in my pockets
That’s what you get turning bullets into rockets
I am a kid of a bad education
The shooting star of lowered expectation

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low
Everybody got a scar
Ain’t it funny how we’re running out of hope?

Yeah oh yeah oh yeah Yeah oh yeah oh yeah

I’m just a face in the crowd of spectators
To the sound of the voice of a traitor
Dirty looks and I’m looking for a payback
Burning books in a bulletproof backpack

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low
Everybody got a scar
Ain’t it funny how we’re running out of hope?

Yeah oh yeah oh yeah Yeah oh yeah oh yeah

Green Day says in the YouTube videos description “BTW we sampled a song from the great Joan Jett’s Bad Reputation album. One of the writers on that song is a total asshole so we’re donating our royalties from this song to IJM and RAINN.” IJM is the International Justice Mission focused on ending slavery and human rights violations. RAINN is the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network and is the largest anti-sexual assault network in the United States.
