Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong to star in indie film with Leighton Meester

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will make his film acting debut opposite Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester in the upcoming independent drama Like Sunday, Like Rain.

Directed by Frank Whaley, the film tells “the story of a struggling musician (Meester) who becomes the guardian of a 12-year-old music prodigy one summer,” according to Deadline. Armstrong will play the role of Meester's boyfriend.

Billie Joe has previously appeared in various documentaries (including Green Day's upcoming ¡Cuatro!), has portrayed himself in a number of film and television appearances, coached last season on NBC's The Voice, and even had a run on Broadway as part of the Green Day-inspired production of American Idiot. Armstrong will also appear in Broadway Idiot, the upcoming documentary centered around the play, and has additionally been rumored to be attached to a film adaption.

Like Sunday, Like Rain will, however, mark the singer's film acting debut. Below, you can check out his first foray in television acting, on a 2002 episode of the short-lived UPN series Haunted, alongside LOST's Matthew Fox:

And, for those of you who aren't familiar with Leighton Meester from her roles in Gossip Girl or Country Strong, you may know her as “the girl from that Cobra Starship song:”

Production for Like Sunday, Like Rain is currently underway in New York. A release date has not yet been announced.
