See Grimes and Ashnikko team up in an action-filled anime video for “Cry”

Last year, London-based rapper Ashnikko released her hit “STUPID” featuring Yung Baby Tate which shot to viral success on TikTok. Now, Ashnikko is teaming up with Grimes for the new track “Cry.”

“Cry” marks Grimes’ first music release since giving birth to her son with Tesla tycoon Elon Musk back in May.

Released on June 17, the two-minute CGI “Cry” video is directed by Mike Anderson and is heavily inspired by anime. The video follows Grimes and Ashnikko as they transform into anime characters. Together, they use their emotions and fury against their prey in battle.

Ashnikko is depicted as a three-headed demon with missing chunks of her body. After tearing apart one of her enemies, she creates a flood of her own tears, showing a more sensitive side to her powerful character. Grimes shows a more gentle side and transforms into a cluster of forest fairies in the video.

According to a press release, the visual “depicts Ashnikko and Grimes mutating and metamorphosing into a demon alter ego of Ashnikko stalking her prey as the two sing ‘this could get gruesome,’ the aftermath of brutal betrayal.”

By the end of the “Cry” video, the two artists come together as a mutation resembling Medusa. Together, they form to take down their enemies together.

Grimes’ last album Miss Anthropocene was released back in February. Since then, she has been focused on being a new mom. Her and Musk welcomed their first child together in May. Following his birth, the couple created a media storm after announcing that he is named “X Æ A-Xii.” Earlier this week, we learned how their son’s name officially appears on his birth certificate.
