Halloween petition wants to move celebration to last Saturday of October

It’s not uncommon for Halloween festivities to fall a few days or even a week before the actual holiday itself. Honestly, I can’t even remember the last time my community held trick-or-treat on Oct. 31.

Still, there are some places that hold tight to the tradition of celebrating this spooky holiday on the day it actually falls – but a petition is looking to change that.

The Halloween & Costume Association started the petition with the goal to permanently move the celebration of Halloween to the last Saturday of October, whether that falls on Oct. 31 or not.

Their goal is 150,000 signatures, and at the rate things are going, they’re more than likely going to exceed that goal.

At the time of publishing, the petition had over 79,000 signatures and counting.

The petition states that moving the celebration would make for a “safer, longer, stress-free” trick-or-treat. It lists a few stats regarding the dangers of Halloween-related injuries and the safety of the spooky holiday.

A few of the facts listed include:

3,800 Halloween-related injuries each year. Talk to your kids about safety before they head out!
63% of children don’t carry a flashlight while they are tick-or-treating. Grab a clip-on light if they don’t want to carry one! Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween. Discuss safety, pre-plan a route, stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks
65% of parents don’t discuss Halloween safety with their children. Talk with your kids and offer ways to ensure a fun and safe experience
51% Of Millennials say Halloween is their favorite holiday, why cram it into 2 rushed evening weekday hours when it deserves a full day!?!

The petition is listed to go to the President of the United States upon meeting its signature goal.
