Halsey threatens press blackout: “No one can take a joke”

While touring through Europe, Halsey announced to the world via Instagram that she was “never doing another interview again because no one can take a joke.” The post was made prior to her show at the Verti Music Hall in Berlin.

The alt-pop singer is currently touring Europe in support of her latest album Manic. Now there’s no denying that being at the top of your game for that 80 minutes onstage is hard work. Yet the tone of many of her interviews seeming involves Halsey having trouble navigating her art and the factions who respond to it. Namely fans and critics.

In an interview with the British paper The Guardian, she was completely transparent about things she was going through in her personal life. The most shocking revelations came when she thought about committing suicide after the deaths of two close friends, Mac Miller and Juice WRLD.

“There’s been a lot of times where I’ve thought: ‘If I keep doing this I’m gonna die,’” Halsey told writer Eve Barlow. “Other times I think: ‘But if I’m alive and I’m not doing this I might as well be dead.’ This is all I’ve known for the past five years. I hope the world gets more sensitive to that. I don’t think it will.”

“It’s terrifying seeing your friends put out posthumous records,” Halsey continued, referencing Mac Miller’s Circles. “Should I be prepared? I used to say music immortalizes you–then it got real. Hopefully, it’s a good thing that we’re talking about it because artists need to take better care of themselves.”

She continued to drop revelations (“My life is tremendously non-conducive to nurturing personal relationships”). Nonetheless, despite the great response that Manic has been getting from the music press, she’s recently made this new edict today. “Peculiar,” she said. “I’ve always been a ‘fuck the critics’ girl. It’s part of my brand. They say: ‘We always loved her.’ I say: ‘Fuck you, no you haven’t!’”

Fans may never learn the reason for Halsey’s press blackout. (While we don’t know any German rock writers personally, we’ve heard from many bands who literally dread doing press when visiting that country.) Much like her art and the avenues she chooses to explore, she may be seeking to control her narrative. But rest assured that lucidity won’t be tinted for the fans.

Halsey is currently on the Manic world tour, which very well might be her last. The run hits the U.S. this summer with PVRIS, blackbear, CHVRCHES and Omar Apollo. Check out a full list of upcoming gigs below with tickets here.
