The award is for recognizing a young songwriter making an impact on the music industry through their artistic works.

Halsey says the award is a tremendous honor because it was for her music instead of something superficial.

“You know, sometimes it’s kind of funny when you’re doing interviews and people want to ask you about who you’re dating and what you’re wearing,” says Halsey. “And you’re thinking to yourself, ‘Is anyone gonna ask me about my music?'”

Fans Tweeted out their support of Halsey following the award and showed how proud they were of the singer.

Other award winners throughout the night included Justin Timberlake, Dallas Austin, Missy Elliott, Tom T. Hall, John Prine and Yusuf (a.k.a. Cat Stevens) among others. Missy Elliott is also now the first female hip-hop artist and third rapper ever to join the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
