The film is based off the comic book series with the same name, which features some of the biggest female characters to inhabit Gotham City, including Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

David Ayer, the director behind Suicide Squad, is set to direct and produce the new film, with Margot Robbie set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is DC’s most popular female character. It is also reported that Robbie will also be executive producing the film.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, known for her work in the action sphere, will be writing the screenplay.

Though the film received mixed reviews, the Suicide Squad soundtrack received high praise, being the first to reach No. 1 in the U.S. since Pitch Perfect 2 in May 2015. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to Suicide Squad is also in development at this point.
